The conversation on tiltrotor hasn't much crept into discourse downunder yet. Why should it matter? The US Army has selected the tiltrotor Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) to augment and replace Blackhawks from 2031, with 160th SOAR announcing they will follow from 2034. The USN and USMC are also looking at tiltrotor options (manned and unmanned) as a possible replacement for Seahawks and UH-1Y/Z.The helicopter (it was a Huey) changed how Army manoeuvres during the Vietnam War, with the advent of airborne cavalry - accelerating units from walking/driving speed to 120mph, able to route directly over obstacles for a distance (radius) of nearly 150 miles.Technology has improved helicopter performance in the intervening 60 yrs - but only incrementally. The latest Blackhawk cruises about 50mph faster with a radius of 200 miles. No matter how gucci the blades, the laws of physics limit helicopter speed, due to the way lift is produced by rotors which are themselves spinning close to limits. But the demand for VTOL capability continues to increase, and US Army has set its sights on speed and range to outpace all adversaries. Tiltrotor combines the VTOL characteristics of a helicopter with the straight wing properties of a turboprop commuter. The result is an almost doubling in speed and range over the Blackhawk.US Army is again on the verge of a transformative change in how they manoeuvre. Arguably, we haven't seen such a step change since the 1960s.Tiltrotor provides Land Forces a solution to the problem that is the maritime IndoPacific - with long overwater distances and limited runways.Tiltrotor offers the commander more options, and fewer logistics challenges. Deploy to the Pacific immediately - no need to bundle in a C-17 or on-board ship. Go cross country with fewer refueling stops. Go further, faster. Options for stepping around threats. Reduced exposure in the hot zone. Quicker CASEVAC response. Getting inside the adversaries OODA loop and disrupting his scheme of manoeuvre.Given Australia's geography and recent strategies focussed on impactful projection and littoral manoeuvre, tiltrotor offers a gamechanger as to how Army thinks and moves. This may not be today or next week. But it's coming - get ready for the revolution.
