Huge thanks to Dr. Kathleen Marker and Kirstin Townsend for joining us in Psyc 505: Research Methods in Applied Psychology tonight! We loved hearing about Dr. Marker's love for qualitative research and her fascinating stories of using it to drive business and organizational impact. We also loved learning first-hand about the Recollective research platform from Kirstin and I can't wait to see what the students come up with for their first qualitative study using these super cool tools!

I'm hosting a session in June that will be focused on supporting women and nonbinary folks who are early career in UXR or Data Science. We'll be chatting about navigating careers, developing and owning a career strategy and development plan, the many mistakes I've made, and lessons learned. I've received feedback over time that one of my strengths is helping people identify their strengths and leverage them in their work while setting healthy boundaries so they can work sustainably, so I'm going to see if I can bring that to a wider group with this session. If you're interested in joining, please fill out this super brief form and I'll add you to the invite list: https://lnkd.in/g57tKVycNote: I've previously done sessions on breaking into UXR; this is not that. I'll be focused on content and activities for folks who've held a UXR or DS role for 6+ months - 3 years (if there's enough interest for 3-5 years, I'll add a cohort). The job market for career transitioners is extremely tough and I have zero magic to offer there and don't want to bolster anyone with false hope that a secret trick or resume hack is going to move the needle. #uxresearch #uxresearchcareers #datascience #datasciencecareers #womenintech

I'm excited to be teaching two classes in USC's Masters of Applied Psychology program this summer: Research Methods in Applied Psychology (new to me) and UX Research (my usual). If you know me, you know I am a total methods and stats nerd and I absolutely love teaching people how to answer the questions that keep them up at night, so I'm really looking forward to spending this semester adding tools to these researchers' toolkits. Do you have a favorite resource for out-of-the-box methods or creative analysis or data storytelling? Let me know and I'll add it to the supplementals list!

I am jazzed to share that I've been promoted to Director, Research & Data Science at Workday! I have the immense privilege of supporting an incredible organization filled with kind and creative people who are tackling challenging problems and are accomplishing together what we previously thought was impossible. I am so proud of them and grateful to get to work with them everyday. As always, they deserve all the credit. I have worked hard for this promotion. I've also been extremely fortunate to have career advocates, leaders, and peers who have invested in me and have created opportunities and set me up for success. A special thank you to Naomi Grewal, Ph.D. who continues to play a huge role in my career, to Tammy Snow who keeps taking chances on me, and Tabitha Steager, PhD, Jenna L., Rebecca Verwolf, CPHR, and Chris Hall who cheer me on and support me through the tough stuff. And lastly, thank you to all the partners, collaborators, and teammates who've inspired me, challenged me, and made my work better. There are too many of you to name; how lucky am I?!

“Lexapro makes Lex - a - pro” has been a common refrain around my house for the last 1.5 years. Occasionally, people ask how I’ve had success in my career and how I keep all the things I do going. As if it’s just me! There’s a whole team of professionals who keep this ship afloat. And they are aided by Lexapro because no amount of leadership books, or grit, or anything else can be effective without tackling my underlying neurochemistry. I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, occasional depressive episodes, and chronic health conditions that include pain and Migraines. Did you know anxiety/depression and Migraines have an interesting and fairly strong bidirectional relationship and neuroscientists don’t yet know why? Fun fact. And even though I have a PhD in psychology and regularly tell other people that mental health is health, I still hesitate to talk about this topic except with those closest to me. It took me many years to even try medication because I had this (problematic) underlying belief that my extreme anxiety fueled my success and that I wouldn’t be as sharp without it. And that people wouldn’t take me seriously or trust me to lead if they knew what I struggled with. I have learned over time that aspects of myself that make me susceptible to anxiety and depression, like a high degree of sensitivity to others and the world around me, are part of what makes me a good leader. (At least, I think I’m a good leader. People say they like working with me and I have no reason to doubt them other than this persistent mean voice in my head). And I’ve learned that with the right tools, coping mechanisms, and medication, I can use those inherent aspects of me effectively. I’m not a good leader despite my anxiety and depression. I’m a good leader with them, because they are a part of who I am. And even when I'm having a depressive episode (like now - they often co-occur with my Migraines), I am a valuable teammate. And even though I wanted to delete this post a bunch of times as I worked on it (mean voice: no one cares or wants to know! People are going to think you’re unprofessional!), I'm sharing it anyway because if it helps even one person feel less alone, it’s worth it. If you can relate, I see you. And I'm here to talk if you need it.#mentalhealth

👏👏👏Garbage surveys are extremely easy to write. Anyone can write a set of survey questions.Good, actually useful surveys are very difficult. Survey design is an undervalued skill because it looks so easy. But don't be fooled, my friends. Survey theater is worse than just not running a survey at all.

Great team and leaders to work with! If you're in Boulder, interested, and meet the basic qualifications, don't hesitate to reach out to me with questions! (Note this role is in my sister team, so while I can answer questions about Research at Workday, I am not the hiring manager for this role).
