Does Dexter ever tell Deb he's a serial killer? ›

LaGuerta begins investigating a blood slide Dexter accidentally left at the church. Increasingly suspicious about Dexter, Debra ultimately ransacks his apartment and discovers his knives and blood slides, forcing Dexter to admit to her that he is a serial killer.

LaGuerta's suspicions of Dexter escalate after learning about his background and the disappearance of Jimenez. They search the area and discover evidence implicating Doakes, which LaGuerta believes was planted. Eventually, LaGuerta devises a plan to confirm Dexter's identity as the butcher.

Debra Morgan finds out Dexter's secret. Despite Dexter Morgan's secrecy, there were characters who became aware that he was a serial killer, or suspected him of murder. By the end of Dexter: New Blood, only four were still alive, with eight being directly murdered by Dexter.

Meanwhile, using Dexter's global positioning system, Lila discovers the cabin in the swamp, where Doakes is being held. Lila finds Doakes imprisoned in the cabin, and realizes that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher. She ignores his pleas for help, and kills Doakes by setting the cabin on fire.

After Hannah killed Deb's new boyfriend, Deb asked Dexter to kill Hannah. Dexter told her he couldn't because he's been sleeping with her. Deb told Dexter she was in love with him. It's almost as weird as the Petraeus scandal.

It culminated in the season 8 finale with Dexter finally saying the words “I love you” before allowing her to die. Deb's death ended up as the catalyst for Dexter to abandon Hannah and Harrison. It's also a huge part of why Deb was able to return as Dexter's Dark Passenger in the New Blood sequel series.

In the series finale, "Sins of the Father", Batista is contacted by Bishop, who suspects Dexter of being the Bay Harbor Butcher, and sends him a picture of her and Morgan together dated a month prior. Batista realizes that Dexter is alive and heads to Iron Lake with LaGuerta's old files on the Butcher case.

In the fifth season premiere "My Bad", Dexter realizes, much to his own surprise, that he genuinely loved Rita and is devastated by her death. Julie Benz reprised her role as Rita as a special guest star in a flashback to her and Dexter's first date, and as a corpse.

She is promoted to Captain in the first episode after blackmailing Deputy Chief Matthews over a madam's contact list which includes his name. Chief Matthews assigns Debra Morgan as the new Lieutenant to LaGuerta's dislike, because she promised the position to Batista.

The previous run ended with Dexter mercifully pulling the plug on sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), dumping her body in the ocean and driving his boat into the eye of a hurricane to certain death. His rationale was to keep loved ones from getting hurt anymore, including Harrison.

Rita's previous, abusive marriage leaves her afraid to have sex, which suits the asexual Dexter perfectly. When she overcomes her demons and becomes more amorous, however, Dexter considers ending the relationship, fearing that she will see him as he really is if they become a real couple.

Rosenberg said that risks had to be taken on the show, and Doakes was "too good to not kill". The character was killed to prevent recycling of used ideas, so that the writers would "stay aggressive and on top of it rather than repeat ourselves", according to Phillips.
